Disc golfers are always on the lookout for ways to add some flair to their game, and one popular way to do so is by dyeing their discs. Whether it's adding a personal touch to your favorite disc or reviving an old, faded one, disc golf dyeing can give new life to your game. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at the art of dyeing disc golf discs and explore how it can enhance your love for the game. So, let's dive in and discover how to breathe new life into your disc golf game with dyed discs!

Different Dying Techniques
There are many different techniques for disc golf dyeing, and each one offers its own unique benefits. Some common materials needed for disc golf dyeing include acetone, 9" cake pans, dye (Pro Chemical and Dye is the best), solo cups, and glass jars.
Some of the different techniques for dying your disc golf discs include floetrol, shaving cream, glue beds, lotion, plastic wrap, pancake mix, and many more. Yes, you read that correctly – I have even used pancake mix for disc golf dyeing!

Floetrol is a popular choice for creating cell dyes. This technique involves mixing the dye with floetrol and acetone then applying a thin layer of floetrol to the bottom of a pan and pouring lines of different colors one on top of the other until you have most of the white floetrol covered. Then you would use a sheet of plastic wrap or a burner disc to drop it in the bed and pull it out. The cells will begin forming and when it looks the way you want it to, you will add the disc you want dyed to the bed. The result is a truly unique cell look that will make your disc stand out on the course.

Another popular technique is using glue beds to create vibrant color designs that are easy to predict. Simply apply a layer of glue to the bottom of a pan. Mix your dyes with acetone in separate glass containers and then use a dropper to apply the acetone/dye mixture to the top of the glue bed to create a one-of-a-kind design. This technique is especially popular for creating swirls, waves, sand dollars, and other amazing designs that stand out on the course.

Shaving cream mounds are another fun and creative way to dye your disc golf discs. This technique involves applying shaving cream to the pan and then adding the dye on top of the cream. Then just place the disc on top of the mound and watch it slowly sink down into the shaving cream. As the dye mixes with the cream, it creates unique, burst designs that are always a surprise.

Lotion dyes are easy to manipulate, but they can be difficult to work with if air bubbles get trapped beneath the surface. This technique involves mixing lotion with your dye and then applying it to the bottom of the pan. You can then move a toothpick around to make flame designs or straight up and down or back and forth to make patterned designs. While the results can be stunning, be prepared to spend some extra time removing any air bubbles that may form during the process.

After trying many different disc golf dyeing techniques, my personal go-to is floetrol. I find that it creates some of the most vibrant and interesting designs. No matter which technique you choose, be sure to have fun with it and experiment to find your perfect look.
In the next section, we will explore some tips for choosing the right design for your dyed disc golf discs.
Choosing the Right Design
When it comes to choosing the right design for your dyed disc, there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, keep in mind that white discs take the dye the best, and the colors will show more vibrantly. With that in mind, it's time to get creative and personalize your disc with a design that reflects your personality and playing style.
One of the great things about disc golf dye is that each disc is different, and each dye can tell a story if you want it to. For example, you can dye designs around the rim so it can be seen while spinning, perfect for when you're showing off your new dye job to your fellow disc golfers. Or, you can opt for designs with axes on them for discs you're throwing from the rough and you may be thinking you are about to hit the trees, adding an extra level of intimidation to your game.
Of course, sometimes you just want a pop of color to make your disc stand out in an open field. Whatever your preferences may be, the most important thing is that your design makes you happy and confident in your game.
So go ahead and get creative with your disc golf dye. Each design is an opportunity to express yourself and take your game to the next level.

Go for it and Hope For the Best
My advice when it comes to dying your disc golf discs, sometimes you just have to go for it and hope for the best. Some techniques are more complex and can lead to mixed results. But that's okay because the journey of dyeing your discs is just as fun as the end result.
There's something exciting about not knowing exactly what you're going to get when you dye a disc. Sure, you may have an idea in mind and choose the right colors and techniques to achieve it. But even then, you never know exactly how it's going to turn out. And that's part of the fun. Some dyes may come out exactly the way you planned, with vibrant colors and crisp lines. Others may be more subtle or unexpected, with different shades blending together in interesting ways. And then there are the occasional mishaps, where the dye doesn't quite take or the design doesn't come out as expected. But even those "failures" can be fun and interesting in their own right. They add character to your disc and make it unique. And if you don't like the way it turned out, you can always try again with a different dye or technique.
So don't be afraid to go for it and try something new when it comes to disc golf dye. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, dyeing your discs can be a fun and creative way to revitalize your love of the game. And who knows, you might just end up with a new favorite disc in the process.
Final Thoughts
From the variety of techniques and dyes available, there is no limit to what you can create with disc golf dye. Experiment with different color combinations and designs to make your disc stand out from the rest. While using floetrol or other additives can help achieve better results, don't be discouraged if your first attempts aren't perfect. The process takes time and practice. So, take a deep breath, trust your artistic instincts, and let the dye do the work. With some patience and a little creativity, you'll have a one-of-a-kind disc that will make your friends envious. So go ahead, give it a shot, and breathe new life into your disc golf game with dyed discs!
